Your steering, suspension and wheel systems are among your car’s most important. They help you control the path of the vehicle. If you don’t take care of these items, you might find yourself off the beaten path — and we don’t mean in a good way. 
Tire Safety Is Imperative For Good Control Surfaces
Your wheels and tires help your car grip the road. Therefore, they go a long way towards stabilizing your control over the vehicle. You want to be able to control your car all the time, especially if you need to make sudden maneuvers. If you can’t keep up your car safely in its lane, you run the risk of accidents, vehicle damage and harm to others.
Therefore, before you set out on the road, check your tires and wheel system. Don’t let problems develop that might lead to danger when you are far from home.
- Inflate your tires so that they contain the right amount of air pressure. Most vehicles have recommended PSI (pounds-per-square-inch) readings. If tires contain too little or too much air, they might collapse or burst while you drive.
- Check the tire treads. The treads are the grooves cut into the exterior of the tire. They help the wheel maintain grip and traction on the road. As tread wears down over time, its effectiveness lessens. Worn treads usually indicate that you need new tires. You can often check tread depth using tricks like the popular Penny Test.
- Look at the tires for signs of leaks, breaks or other damage. Many cars have check tire lights that can alert drivers to risks of flat tires. However, sometimes, simply checking your wheels for signs of damage might prove beneficial.
- Check the wheels for loose lugs and bolts in the tire attachments. These can lead to major problems if left unchecked.
- Have your mechanic check your suspension, brake pads and wheel integrity. The mechanic can likely tell you if these large systems have developing problems.
- Check your spare tires for integrity. These tires might sustain damage even when you don’t use them. You don’t want to get caught with both a flat tire and a flat spare.
You likely cannot use your car insurance coverage for normal tire services. However, if your tires experience damage from car accidents or similar incidents, your policy might cover repairs. Ask your agent to explain the specifics of what your auto policy will and will not cover.
